Upgraded Canon imagePROGRAF Printers for Technical Professionals

Canon U.S.A. has launched a series of Canon imagePROGRAF color wide-format inkjet printers for professionals in architecture, engineering, construction, and computer-aided design. The 44-inch aqueous-ink printers are designed for productive, high-volume operation in medium-to-large workgroups of technical professionals.

The three new printer models are listed below with their manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP):

Canon imagePROGRAF iPF830 ($5,495)
Canon imagePROFGRAF iPF840 ($6,495)
Canon imagePROGRAF iPF850 ($7,995)

All three models feature 15,360 nozzles and Canon’s innovative reactive dye/pigment inkset for intricate full-color renderings, technical drawings, and maps. Reactive Ink technology uses four highly colorfast dye inks (CMYK) for producing bold, expressive color, plus one channel of pigment matte black ink.

The inks provide superior adhesion to media, resistance to scratching and markers, and minimal “bleeding” between colors and text. Even small text printed on colored backgrounds or on uncoated technical papers is crisp and legible. The “high-chroma” magenta ink included in the iPF830, iPF840, and iPF850 inkset improves the printing of precise lines, smooth curves and small text on technical and office documents.

Productivity Features

To support uninterrupted, high-production printing, the iPF840 and iPF850 models feature a two-roll media system that can handle different types and widths of print material up to 44 inches. The media rolls can be switched automatically without manual intervention.

Workgroups can further improve productivity by using the optional high-capacity 700 ml ink tanks. With this option, users don’t have to pause print jobs in order to replace an empty tank.

The Economy Print Mode, helps lower the cost per print and can output an A1 size print on plain paper in 22 seconds. Cost-per-print tracking enables users to monitor and reduce print costs over time.

The iPF850 comes with a high-capacity stacker that can hold up to 100 sheets of different-sized paper (up to A0). The stacker neatly gathers newly printed documents to prevent paper curling and enable users to quickly collect their documents.

“Overall, the imagePROGRAF iPF850 has a great design, providing a definite time-saver when doing large sets of prints,” said Nate Herman, professional engineer at Sathre-Bergquist, Inc. “It is very quick and easy to pull the stacker out when changing paper and it rolls back into place effortlessly with no need to worry about making sure it is aligned. Prints stack perfectly well and can be taken right off the stacker and stapled which saves a tremendous amount of time.”

Other features of the new printers include: Gigabit Ethernet for fast file transfer and a built-in 320 GB hard drive that simplifies handling multiple complex jobs in shared printer environments. With the built-in hard drive, users can relieve workloads from their computers, store and retrieve print jobs with the touch of a button, and take advantage of a Remote User Interface and password-protected mailboxes to keep the workgroup productive.

MFP M40 Models

For workgroups that could benefit from built-in scan-to-print, scan-to-file, and file-sharing capabilities, each of the new imagePROGRAF printers is also available as multi-function device. Each system includes an M40 scanner, SmartWorks MFP software, a computer, touch-screen monitor, and MFP stand.

The MFP M40 models of the imagePROGRAF iPF850, iPF840, and iPF 830 can scan documents up to 2 mm thick. The suggested retail price for each of three MFP M40 models is as follows:

  • Canon imagePROGRAF iPF830 MFP M40: $9,495
  • Canon imagePROGRAF iPF840 MFP M40: $10,495
  • Canon imagePROGRAF iPF850 MFP M40: $11,995

“In today’s business environment, companies require the proper tools to help conserve costs and time without compromising quality,” said Junichi Yoshitake, senior vice president and general manager, of Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “With an upgraded system to help improve productivity and ink tanks designed for better efficiency, these new imagePROGRAF large format printers can help professionals to quickly and cost-effectively achieve precise technical documents.”

User-Friendly Software

Efficiency-enhancing features go beyond hardware with these new imagePROGRAF large format printers. Available software provides the additional functionality that technical workgroups in specific industries might appreciate.

For example, Canon’s PosterArtist Lite gives users the tools to easily create professional-looking posters, signs, and banners. The software includes royalty-free templates, backgrounds, clip art, and fonts.

Canon’s Direct Print & Share cloud portal software includes a shortcut feature for batch printing and allows files to be dragged and dropped into hot folders on the desktop.

Canon’s imagePROGRAF Print Utility app enables print jobs to be managed from mobile devices. The mobile app facilitates wireless printing from a compatible Apple iPad® device.

Four independent software vendors have also made their software compatible with these new imagePROGRAF printers

Onyx Graphics, a Canon Group Company, is a long-time leader in print-management software for large-format graphics production. Onyx Graphics helps customers increase productivity, reduce costs, and gain a competitive edge with superior print and color quality.

SAi provides professional design-to-production software solutions for companies engaged in signmaking, digital printing, screen printing and CNC machining.

System Development Inc. (SDI) makes computer graphics viewing, editing, montaging, converting, and printing software for the oil and gas, aerospace, and automotive CAE/CAD industries.

CADlink Technology Corporation is a well-established developer and worldwide distributor of design and production software for digital printing, signmaking, and CNC machining.

The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF850, iPF840 and iPF830 printers were shown publicly for the first time at the 2015 ESRI User Conference in San Diego and began shipping July 20.

Larger Media Rolls

In conjunction with the release of the imagePROGRAF iPF830, iPF840, and iPF850 models, Canon has added four new large-format media options to the imagePROGRAF media portfolio. For the first time, Canon will offer both 150-foot and 300-foot rolls of four products:

  • 20 lb. bond
  • 20 lb. recycled bond
  • 24 lb. bond
  • 24 lb. premium coated bond

Users who load two 42 in. x 300 ft. rolls of paper on one of the imagePROGRAF iPF840 or iPF850 will be able to run 2,000 sq. ft. of uninterrupted printing.

These papers are also offered in 30-inch widths. Because the new iPF840 or iPF850 printers can switch automatically between paper widths and types, users can choose to load the printer with a 30-inch roll of 24 lb. premium coated bond for special projects and a 42-inch roll of 20 lb. bond for economical everyday printing.

Canon’s new recycled bond paper supports Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei, a pledge to work to harmonize environmental commitment with the economic interests of the company’s business activities.
